Basically, the CNC milling machine can operate completely on its own once the program has been written and downloaded to the machine. The operator will only have to get the machine set up with the right tools for the job and get the material into the proper position. From there, as they say, the rest is history. The machine will not stop until the complete program has been run through and the product is finished based upon what the program says. This will allow the operator to tend to other jobs or machines in the meantime.
The milling machine is used for shaping metal and other materials. Not only can the milling machine drill a hole straight down like a drill press, the material can be placed into the side of the tool and allow for shaping of the flanks. With a milling machine, many different tasks can be performed.
Milling machines can be controlled through various different means. They can be operated manually. They can be digitally operated. They can be mechanically automated. They can even be operated through a computer system which is also known as computer numeric controlled (CNC).
Most of these machining centers are ergonomically designed - Based on its ergonomic features, operators will not be forced to bend, crouch and contort your body during setup. Furthermore, the cutting tool is operating within an enclosed area is an effective preventative measure of avoiding unwanted accidents resulted from direct exposure of milling operations.
Once all of the axes were in union with one another, very complicated geometries are able to be made easily with this kind of machine. However, the ability to program the complicated geometry is beyond the most operators' ability. For that reason, 5-axis mill machines at all time is programmed by the CAM.
